St Helier Central holds a special place in my heart, it is where I started my independent adult life, working and living in the district and growing up, where I spent a lot of my childhood with friends who lived nearby.
Over the last 8 years I have worked tirelessly to bring about positive tangible changes for islanders and successfully brought propositions that have made life easier for working people.
I introduced free GP visits for children and full-time students and extended the young person’s bus pass to include students and apprentices.
I updated our Control of Housing and Work law to make it easier to understand, using simpler language and structure and provided for increased transparency in making future changes. I modernised considerations of relationships and family units and made allowances for digital solutions in supplying and demonstrating a status under the Law.
I also reduced the time required to acquire permanent entitled status from 30 years to 25 years.
I’ve brought measures to protect employers and support businesses, including proposing whistleblowing legalisation to enhance employees’ protections, and extending licensed roles.
I’ve pushed for more transparency in government and better civic engagement by publishing government policy publicly for the first time, securing the future of the Political Awareness and Education Sub-Committee and establishing the International Cultural Centre (a free service offering confidential support and guidance for people living in Jersey)
My Priorities
- Focus on revenue raising mechanisms that are sustainable and do not disproportionally impact those who can least afford it
- Target public money to areas of real need, where longer term savings can be made if issues are addressed in a timely and consistent way
- Advocate holistic approaches, recognising things such as good health are not just linked to medical care, but also to our physical environment, mental wellbeing and social integration and interactions
- Encourage joined up thinking where transparency is key and duplication is reduced, resulting in
savings
- Ensure everyone is aware of their rights, information is easily and freely available and we all feel supported
